SWEEPSTAKE RACE RESULTS

LAWN BOWLS LEAGUE FIXTURES ALMOST COMPLETED: FOR THE GUTIERREZ | SHIELD COMPETITION DIFFICULT TASK FOR THE SELECTORS: PROGRAMME FOR SATURDAY

(BY “JACK HỲ”)

There was only one bowls match last Saturday. This was the one between the Hongkong" Football Club and the Yacht Club in the Third Division,

The oft-postponed match between Craigengower and the Civil Service which was to have been played last week has again been postponed. It will probably take place this week-end. With the exception of this match, all the League Axtures in 'the three Divisions have been com- pleted."

ม่

Playing at home last week, the Hongkong Football Club

beat Yacht Club by 21 shot J. Russell had the better of B. E. Maughan by 15 shots,

and V. Walker had 19 shots in hand against A. W. Brown. Russell failed to register a single shot in the first four heads in the course of which Maughan chalked upnine shots. Russell thereafter tightened his belt and started bowling in earnest. He mono- polised the scoring for the next ten heads during which he scored no fewer than 24 shots.

WIN BY 15 SHOTS

Alded by a five towards the end of the game, he emerged winner by 15 shots. Walker too was down to Brown in the initial stages of the game. Up to the tenth head, he was six shots behind "Brown who then had twelve to his credit, But for the rest of the game Walker scored on all heads except twở to win by 19 shots. A. Nissim's 13 shot win over W. J. Reld was the only Yacht Club success.

THE NINTH

EXTRA RACE MEETING will be held (weather permitting) at HAPPY VALLEY on SATURDAY, 21st October, 1939, commencing at

GUTIERREZ SHIELD

The representatives of the eleven

cuntries which have entered for the Gutierrez Shield competition have been selected. While a glance

at the names chosen has convinced me that the selectors have in most cases done, their best to put on thely strongest teams, they will, nevertheless get more than their just share of bricks for their pains,

For such countries as China, Australia, the - rumppines, Switzerland and Malaya, on account of the paucity

of names submitted, the selectors have a comparatively easy time and grousing will, therefore, be reduced to a minimum. But for Portugal, England, India and others, the selectors' taak Es anything but enviable.

More

especially is this.s0 If a selec- tor has to choose a team from players belonging to several different clubs. It is almost impassible for him then to pick

a team which win meet with

everyone's approval.

To say with any degree of certainty which country will eventually win the shield at this stage is very much a shot in the dark. On paper, I should imagine that England and For- tugal possess the two strongest rinks, but as they will meet in the second round (I am already taking it for granted that China will lose to Portugal in the first "round), one of them ought therefore to be left with a clear field.

However, it is not always the strongest team that wins, some-
