"CAPTAIN'S KNOCK"

Kitchell Also Comes Off

With Another Big Score

"BY E, U. ROPES

Some interesting cricket matches were played over the week-end, the highlight of which was the fine captain's innings by A. E. Perry, who knocked up a brilliant 90 to enable the Civil Service Cricket Club to score a well-de- served victory over the Cricket Club at Chater Road.

The Club were without the two young Pearces though the "senior member" of this well-known cricketing family, Tami Pearce, trade one of his now all-too-rare appearances and batted with all his old-time skill and polish for as pretty a 27 runs as could be desired.

Ε

KITCHELE AGAIN

Dr. Lindsay Ride was ori-be amongst the leading. cricket ginally down to lead the Club

just, as there were less than two minutes to go when the last Army wicket fell.

Taking first lease of the wicket the Club declared at 150 för 8, which seemed a safe enough total,

M. P. Madar made his debut as In view of the fact that the Civil captain of the LR.C. 1st XI but I Service batting, on paper, was far gathered after the match that he from strong. G. E. P. Diyett made was only "acting" in the absence 78 runs in a forceful innings and of A. R. Minu. Anyway I thought was out trying to get a quick hun- he handled his team very well and dred, but T. E. Pearce played the he should make an ideal leader of best innings for the Club. He still the Indians who are a difficult has some very pretty shots and team to handle by reason of the though he is perhaps the oldest fact that everybody in the side cricketer in Hongkong to-day, some appears to be a ce of the younger blood would do there is a dearth of run getters. well to watch him at the nets. They are bound to pick up a few points in the art of batsmanship.

PERRY'S EFFORT

When the Civil Service went in to bat, Perry must have left that there were only one or two men in the side capable of making any runs. He, there- fore, very rightly went out to get them himself and how far he succeeded may be gauged from the fact that the Civil Servants won by the comfort- able margin of six wickets, with Perry (90) as the highest

scorer.

DoWier,

As I predicted in my notes last Saturday, A. B. Kitchell, after his century in the tatra- club match

on the Double Tenth, came off with another big innings 67 not out. He appeared well on his way to his second century of the season when the closure was applied, M. P. Madar made a useful 30, also not out, the cares of cap- tancy apparently not having any "effect on his batting.

PRETTY DRIVING

When Capt. Godby got going for the Army, it looked at one stage F. E. The most refreshing part about cricket at the Civil Service Crickes Club this year is the fact that they have any number of young blood playing for them. In a year of two these recruits should develop

In the only other First Division Kame, Recreio were held to a draw by the Royal Air Force but as I was not at this match I cannot comment on it.

KOWLOON JUNIORS

If the Kowloon Cricket Club juniors will be represented in the League by the same 11 men who turned out for them last Saturday, I cannot see any other team beat-

honours for this team for season 1939-1943,

They are a very powerful batting side, such men as B. D. Lay, W. Mulcahy. F. J, Lay, R. Broadbridge being available, As for the bowling Bertram Lay and Rupert Baldwin ap. pear to hare run into mid- season form already.

R. Singh and W. Gegg appear to be two very useful bowlers while Sen Gupta, who is better known on the hockey field, also appears to The University beat the Police be a useful man with the bat.
