NEW YORK, Sept 19 (Reuter)- Free sterling continued to fluctuste erratically; however, after an early slump, it steadied somewhat owing to persistent, but not particularly **gressive, demand
Operators explained that New York had now become an area of substantial support for sterling 13 a direct outgrowth of straight com. mercial transactions, while trade interests who had been consistently on the buying side for the better part of last week, were coming into the market for deferred needs, namely, the crossing out of techni- cally created short positions on favourable opportunities.

COTTON: Support to-day was very poor and prices declined in sympathy with Wall Street and following on news of the most recent developments in Europe, which brought about considerable liquida- tion and hedge-selling.
RUBBER: Reports of general selling and weakness on the Lon- don market caused a lower opening here" and prices declined further on lack of demand and on offerings by foreign interests.
WHEAT: Prices to-day went lower, influenced by the weakness of stocks, selling by tired long-interests and poor export demand.
