VIM GAINS NARROW VICTORY AT COWES

U.S. Yacht Beats Tomahawk

The Royal Yacht Squadron ended their four-day regatta at Cowes recently, when rain fell in torrents and bright intervals were few. However, there was some good racing in a moderate northeasterly breete falling ligfi; in the afternoon, writes the "Daily Telegraph” correspondent.

The American yacht, Vim, won the 12-metre race of 27 miles by only 42sec. She had been 1 min. 3sec. ahead at the end of the first round, so Tomahawk, which, as usual, was her nearest divat, made a slight gain late in the match, which was closely" contested:

FOUR POINTS FOR

HAMPSHIRE

Hampshire took four points for a lead of 81 runs over Surrey at Portsmouth. This they increased in their second innings to 185 for the loss of one wicket, when the match, which had been much in- terrupted by rain throughout, was left drawn.“

G. Knott, the Hampshire bowler, by taking eight wickets for 85, surpassed anything he had pre- viously done for the county. He was robbed of a ninth wicket owing to m. fleidsman slipping ori the wet ground, when about to make a catch.

Mackenzie. another young Hampshire bowler, had a different experience. He took a wicket third ball, and then was hit for 30 runs off two overs.

This hafsh treatment came from F. R. Brown, who" the- roughly enjoyed himself with the bowling for 50 minutes, while he scored 61,

Sellers' Sporting Declaration

The fact that a lot of time had been wasted owing to rain did not deter Yorkshire at -Cardiff recently. Going all out for runs in the morning, they declared and then got Glamorgan cute for 140, to win by 86 runs.

This was their 13th victory of the season. An outright win was necessary to keep them at the top of

the championship, for first innings' points would have reduced their average to below that of only four points from their match Middlesex, Gloucestershire, gaining 2 with Derby, dropped further be- 1hind the leaders.

Glamorgan just as boldly took up the challenge and seemed likely to achieve the feat when 68 came, in the first hour. Then, however, Yorkshire got оп top and eventually triumphed with three- quarters of an hour to spare.
