NO NERVOUSNESS IN EVIDENCE

The local Stock Market stood up well to the now war situation when Ice House Street' resumed business yesterday after the Bank Holiday. There was no undue nEKYOUSNESS in evidence, and no evidence of any pelling pressure. Prices were nominal, and the day passed quietly, with some inquiries for small lots of shares at low prices in anticipation of an improvement in the market.

Split

OPPOSING VIEWS ON WAR POLICY CAPETOWN, Sept. 5 (Rea- ter)-The nature of the split In the South African Cabinet on the war policy is indicated by the debate in the Assembly which the Premier of South *Africa, Gen, Hertzog, and Gen. Smats expressed the opposing viewpoints.

Gen, Hertzog read a declaration of policy that South Africa's rela- tions with the various belligerents would continue as if no war is be. ing waged subject to the proviso that the existing relations and ob- ilgations between Bouth Africa and | Great Britain and other members of the British Commonwe¬Ith continue unimpaired.

".

NAVAL BASE

The Premier specially instanced the naval base at Simonstown and aald that nobody would be permit ted to use South African territory for the purpose of doing anything which would impair those relations and obligations.

Gen. Smuts moved 真拉 amendment calling for sever- ance of relations with Ger-

· many and continued co- British operation with the Commonwealth.

He said that if they followed Gen, Hertzog's courte, they would be compelled ultimately to take sides. If they parted from the Empire on this, when the day of trouble came when German de- mand for the return of South Africa would me made at the point of the bayonet they would stand alone.
