London and New York closed.
The Singapore market was steadier; with traders more optimis- tic due to better over-weekend political news and higher New York Stock Market.
It was reported that tyres sales for the first six months of 1939 was almost 50 per cent more than for the same period of 1938, New car sales for July this year were also reported as 50 per cent better than July, 1938,

Limited buying by the Trade furnished demand which was off- set by hedging and realiaing sales. The market technically has im- proved and liquidation is believed to have about, run its 'course. Opinions regarding the immediate trend outlook are very mixed. Some quarter's opinion holds that with an apprehension over the aim of recent legislation to increase, the movement of American cotton to foreign markets and to avoid any further accumulation against loans, foreign consumers will be less inclined to buy for forward delivery on prospect of the possibility of cheaper "basts' cottor later Therefore it is difficult to foresee active buying at the current price level to take the increased volume of hedges, unless anything unexpected occurs to change the existing conditions. While the other opinion is that the continued tightness of contracts, together with the more constructive governmental policy, should maintain prices on a very steady level, especially in the "near months. We think October and December deliveries will firmly maintain their. premiums. possibly later widening further from distants, but for long puit range, would prefer purchases May delivery.

The market bere opened higher on better advices from the- primary markets and prices later. advanced on trade and factory demand together with further reports of firmness. abroad, The re markable steadiness, during extended periods of uncertainty and, market dullness is impressive.
CHICAGO WHEAT
The undertone of the market was firm. With the result of the constricting effect of the loan, nearby positions have strengthened. Domestic demand reflects the strength or cash markets. The Cana- dian market has shown a little improvement following the strength of foreign markets. "Liquidation has about run its course, but new features are needed, to change the existing conditions.
