India May Produce More Quinine

A seven-year planting scheme to produce 140,000 pounds of quinine ! annually-the amount now im- ported, mainly from Java--is being considered by, the authorities In Simla.

This would bring India'a produc- tion of the drug up to the present level of consumption of 210,000 pounds

Actually the country needs 800,- 000 lbs. to give proper medical treatment to her 100,000,000 malaria victims.

The scheme has been drawn up by an expert investigating the moribund Indian quinine industry. While no great reduction in the cost of quinine is fareshadowed the figures show that in suitable areas quinine can be produced in India at world market prices
