The frauds practised on the Migrants by the Chinese Brokers (Crimp and Coolie Brokers) and the protection of these frauds by British Merchants, the disputes thereon caused much trouble to the Chinese labouring in Hongkong, and brought on violent outbreaks and loss of life. The wretched state of the vessels in which the Emigrants are stowed, the want of proper food and medicine, the cruelties practised on them during the passage, the contention and bitter feelings between the Chinese and English crews, the subjection and want of liberty on board, and the frequent outbreaks of disease.
