The market opened with prices unchanged for all deliveries 23 compared with Saturday's closing quotations,"
Quiet conditions prevalled throughout the day. Although de- mand from consuming centres for "actuals" was fair, dealers and speculators kept aloof, awaiting further developments on the Ex- changes in London and New York, which, following the usual sum- mer practice, remained closed on Saturday last. Consequently only a negligible volume of business was recorded.
According to cable-reports received from New York the con- sensus of opinion amongst Rubber brokers as to the probable future trend of the market is optimistic. These circles base their belief on the fact that bustness-recovery is continually making steady pro- ogress in U.S.A., thus assuring further satisfactory" Rubber-absorp- tion, always providing however, that the market will not be subject to unforeseen outside influences, such as political troubles etc,

Rubber stocks held in the United Kingdom showed a decrease of 1.717 tons for the week ending July 8, 1939.
NEW YORK COTTON
Following up the steadiness at the opening, the market became active and strong, reflecting the good demand caused by new trade buying and "bear" covering. Some foreign buying was also in evidence. There was a scarcity of contracts, which aided the ad- vance in prices. The market closed with prices very near the day's best levels.
NEW YORK RUBBER
The market was again a narrrow affair, and a slightly lower $1 $12.60 adjustment of prices was noted. However, a steady to firm under-
$3,80 tone was evinced towards the close.
Continued weakness was displayed by to-day's market. Prices moved lower on liquidation and hedging.
