OUT ON OCEAN · BED IN THETIS DISASTER

Divers Tell Of Tremendous Difficulties They Faced

LONDON, June 5 (Reuter)-The first stories of the drama that was played out on the ocean-bed in Liverpool Bay by five Scapa Flow divers, who were fighting to rescue the crew of the ill-fated submarine Thetis, were told when the divers landed at Liver- pool from the destroyer Winchelsea yesterday.

The diving operations were | directed by air compression | by the diving expert, Mr. James McKenzie. The dif- culties he and his companions faced are a commentary on the rescue chapter of the tragic story which is now exercising the public mind.

Diver Taylor, describing the first descent, of his companions, Sin- clair and McKenzie, at, 12.55 a.m. on June 3. to the "News Chronicle," sald

"The tide-race was fire knots, causing McKenzie to fight every inch of the way, down. It was pitch black on the ocean bed.

TIDAL CURRENTS

Feeling his way. McKenzie touched metal. It was the sunken submarine. Then, the tremendous difficulty was that he was still in tidal currentя."

McKenzie, he said, clamber- ed on to the deck and knock- ed four or five times with a hammer. He got a faint res- ponst
