The tanning industry in Canada dates back
1885 when the early. settlers established plants to preserve the hides from their domestic early and from the wild animals.
To-day-tanning is one of the chlef manufacturing Industries in the Dominion. its annual output supplying a large proportion of the requirements of the leather- using Industries of Canada is well 33 providing for a substantial ex- port trade.
The value of the output of the tanneries has increased steadily during the past five years and in 1937 reached a "high total of $26,269.794.

The tone of the market continued to be good at the opening. Prices advanced with the increased activity in the market on trade and foreign buying. Short-covering was also noted. and May option remained firm. The market closed firm with prices main- tained at the day's high levels. «

The market continued to be dull and featureless. Measured by price movements, traders were still hesitant because of the pending "quota" decision. In terms of volume, trading was very much limit- ed. Prices again moved slightly lower.

The market opened with a better tone to-day. There was an early advance in prices on speculative buying and short-covering. Later, the tone of the market was slightly easier, but the closing. prices remained almost at the day's high levels.
