S. A. RUMJAHN'S PLUCKY FIGHT AGAINST AGE AND TSUI WAI-PUI

Run Off Feet, Exhausted, Yet Refused To Give Game Till

After Four

Sets

H.K. CYCLING CLUB

WINNER HANDICAPPED: HIS CHILD VERY ILL

(By "TAC")

Tsui Wai-pui (holder) beat S. A. Rumjahn

9-7, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3" in the, semi- finals of the Open Singles Championships:

DRAMA STALKED THE STAND COURT AT THE HONGKONG. CRICKET CLUB GROUND YESTERDAY when Tsui Wal-pui, holder of the Colony singles title beat Sirdar Rumjahn by three sets to one to enter the final. To the spectators, and there were hundreds of them packing the Court, there were, of course, only two opponents on view. To the players, however, it was very different.

The winner was fighting his sports battle with the knowledge that his child was lying at home fighting a life and death battle (in fact, in the fourth set he... received the news that it was not expected to live) and Rumjahn was playing, after the second set, with the knowledge that, though the spirit was willing as it ever was, the flesh of 37 years could not stand the strain of a five set match with a man of Tsui's calibre.

Up to a point Rumjahn's; was a magnificent display, though his failure to clinch the first set was a terrible dis- appointment to his sup- porters.

Five-two up, and then 5-3, and 30-love on his own service, he suddenly became very, in- decisive, just at the moment when he should have staked everything on a slashing at- tack, and it cost him indeed.
