Before me, James H. Endicott, Acting Consul for the port of Hongkong, personally appeared Clyde F. Day, mate of the American bark "Reindeer", who, upon his solemn oath, doth depose and say: Upon the 19th inst. John Madison, Carpenter of the bark, after having been several days at work, returned on board, and when being requested to go on to work refused to do so; he, the mate, and not the Captain, put Madison in irons, where he remained till next morning; that the Captain, Michele, not being on board at the time carpenter was put in irons, on the next morning "at daylight" he took him out of irons and told him to turn to, but he refused; and then struck at Capt.
