Captain? I have seen in your News-papers statements of vessels being plundered and robbed by persons wearing the police uniform. What is to prevent our Ships being plundered in the same way. Your Excellency, upon Mr. Mayne's authority, denies that the police lent themselves to a plan for Madion's escape, or had anything to do with effecting it. They beg to refer you to the accompanying depositions of Thomas Cahill and James Mitchell, which come fully up to this point, and show that Madion was taught and encouraged to disobedience of orders with promises of being released, and for that very purpose.

And they further call Your Excellency's attention to the copy of the letter of

Mr. Mc. Tarrant, which shows that Mr. Grant, himself the Assistant Superintendent of Police, the officer who was sent on board the "Reindeer", to release Madion, was timely, by his own acknowledgement, cognizant of the whole affair, and suggested the modus operandi. Mr. Mayne's sweeping denial to the contrary notwithstanding. Your Excellency can judge whether any member of the police force lent themselves to Madion's escape.
