I beg further to enclose copy of a better addressed to M. Gavsett, the master of the "Reindeer", by the Solicitor who provided the Fine and Amends in trust. M. Gavsett appears to have called on Mr. Turner for his statement of what Consequence certain reports recurred, in reference as to his conduct in the transaction which had received circulation and credit amongst his countryman.
His letter is too important in that it disproves the statement previously made to Captain W. Bligh that this payment was "authorized" by Mr. Kennan, or Mr. Nichols, and without the knowledge or consent of either.
The voluminous documents attached to my despatch No. 167, added to these, will, I trust, give Her Majesty's Government all the information required regarding this untoward matter.
I have only to hope that the position I have taken may receive approval and confirmation.
I have the honor to be, with the highest respect, Sir, Your most Obedient, Humble Servant, Schomburgk
