review. It is very gratifying and gives us a feeling of security to know that we have on our Board practical business men who believe in the future prosperity of the Colony and act, accordingly,
I am glad to perceive a strain. of optimism running through your speech. The decision to start- a pinned building, programme is, in my opinion, a sound and wise one; periodically, in 1925 and again in 1933, we were told by the pessimists that this Colony is finished, and I have heard the same again quite recently-personally, “I consider these predictions ridiculous. There seems to be a fear that all recon- atruction and expenditure in such is unwise at the present time, 1 cannot agree. This fear causes lack of progress, without which no con- cern can be of any benent.
Our wharves and godowns are the Company's very existence, and It is of the utmost importance to keep them up-to-date and modern. without which we cannot hope to progress as we should.
ONLY ONE COURSE LEFT OPEN
Are we to go backwards or for- ward? If you have any faith in our future, there is manifestly only one course open to us and that is the course our Board, with fore- sight and due consideration to their belief in the future welfare of our Colony, proposes to adopt.
I should like to quote, if I may, part of a speech made by one of our Board, the Hon. Mr. Dodwell, at the recent meeting of members
the
Royu Hongkong Golf Club :-
"Uncertainty as to the future of the Colony in 1933 was one of the factors on which we pessimists laid great stress. It may be argued that the Colacy's future is still obscure, but so is the future of the world. and if we are to wait until every factor becomes favourable for re- buliding, few of us present members are ever likely to sample the com- forts of the imposing Clubhouse the Committee have planned for us. Experience since 1933 in dealing with the uncertainties of the future have taught me that the best course is to go ahead just as if no uncer: tainties existed....
This is apt of our Company.
As Our property immediately adjoining the Wharres is on a 199 rears' lease we are, I think, in a Kavourable position; rumour has it that some form of Best Trust is contemplated in 1949, and there is no doubt that no matter what form of Port Development may be ultimately decided upon, the Wharf Company mus take its place, therein, ant that therefore develop- ment of our property on modern nies can only react to the advan- tage of the shareholders.
STILL CHEAPEST IN THE EAST
It is interesting to learn that the Company's storage and tranship- ment rates have remained the same as they were in 1924 and that our charges are still the cheapest in the Far East. This policy cannot but commend itself to shippers, shipowners and consignees and intst considerably strengthen the Company's inclusion in any future Port Development. .
Before I sit down; I should like to endorse the recommendation of the Board to allocate the amounts shown in the
under accounts "Grant to Employees" and. “Bonus to Staff." Our staff is capable and emcient and I have no doubt difficult emergencies have arisen during the last year. I am con- Adent shareholders will agree with me in approving these allocations.
It gives me much pleasure to second the proposition that the re- port and accounts as presented be adopted.
OTHER BUSINESS
The appointment of Mr. H, V. Wilkinson, Mr. C. C. Black and Mr. A. H. Perin to the Board of Direc- tors, was unanimously.confrined. The appointment of the Hon. Mr. MK Lo, in place of Bir Robert Ho-tung, who retired last Decem- ber, was also confirmed,
The Hon. Mr. B. H. Dodwell, Mr. A.. E. Compton and Mr. D. Drum- mond, retiring Directors, unanimously re-elected,
