The Assistant Superintendent, on going on board the Barque Reindeer, saw the Chief Mate of the ship, to whom he expressed the object of his coming on board, viz., to ascertain the information received by the Police was correct, that a Seaman on board the ship had been severely beaten and placed in irons, and if so to take him on shore to make his complaint to a Magistrate. The Chief Mate replied that the man was in irons, and asked by what authority the Police came on board; he was told in answer that the Superintendent of Police had given the order.
