The performances of Rose Elect and Navylight, which walked away respectively with the Maiden Stakes and the Trial Plate; each has enhanced its chances as the probable Derby winner, with "the first-named slightly more favoured; it clipped four- fifths of a record off King's Warden's 1937 record for the distance.

The consistently good riding of Mr. Charlie Encarnação, who had' three wins and a third in eight starts and might be considered unlucky not to have gained at least another place; and the success of Mr. Eu Tong-sen Rose Elect's owner, who headed the owner's list with three wins and a third.
