WRITING"
AMONGST CHINESE
BY T. PAUL GREGORY
"The possibility of communication with the un- seen world of spirits has always exerted a tremendous fascination. The Great War gave this desire a decided flip in the West; for the losses in the conflict created an overwhelming urge to seek some means to bridge the chasm separating this life from the next. The longing for tidings from the dead became so marked that a singular craze was born, and the first few years after the War saw a rush by interested persons to purchase planchettes, "puija boards," and the like. "Spirit writing," as the messages obtained by means of such mechanical devices were called, has a special vogue, and was hailed as something entirely novel and unprecedented in the history of mankind, The Chinese,

The comparatively small scale of the Fair this year is solely attributable to the War which, towards the end of last year, spread to the South, resulting in the fall of the important city of Canton. China's need for war relief is tremendous and in this cause there has been and still is magnificent response from Chinese nationals throughout the world.
