James Reenan, examined on oath, states:
I am the United States Consul at this port. I charge the defendant, that being an articled seaman of the U. S. Ship "Reindeer", he absented himself from that vessel without the permission of the Master, and refused to return to his duty on board. Articles of the "Reindeer" put in evidence.
Defence:
I admit that I am an articled seaman of the "Reindeer". I slipped on Carpenter's ladder... I refuse to return on board, fearing, in good faith, that if I do, I shall never see my mother alive again. I summoned the Captain before the Court of Petty Sessions, for an assault... my heart is too dry for fighting...
