MY ARTICLE TO-DAY WILL BE CONFINED TO COMMENTS IN GENERAL ON THE DOINGS OF THE NEW PONIES ENTERED FOR THE ANNUAL RACE meeting which opens on Saturday, February 25, and` officially rings up the curtain for the 1939 Season. last week has seen quite a number of the contenders being put through regular trials, and coupled with the opportunity given owners last Wednesday and Thursday mornings, of galloping their ponies on the grass course; rail fans have been able to gain an insight into the actual capabilities of the various entrants.
The full complement of jockeys racing at the Valley last season are still available and with arrivals, from the Northern ports, owners will have ample talent at their disposal for the five days of racing. Mr. T. L. Wong, who will do service for the Lan stable, is due in the Colony over the week end, while I understand that Mr. Marshall will be arriving on the 16th instant or thereabouts and will be up on the Sassoon nominations. Three Men's Deague teams complete their season's Bxtures là to-morrow's softball programme, which will consist of two ladies', three men's and five Hong matches. The ladies start off the day, as usual, at 10.00 am., when the Cardinals meets the Cubs in the only fixture to be played on the Filipino Club ground, the Wildcats-Filiplao girls match having been postponed owing to the latter being unable to raise a' team.
The Cardinals cannot afford to drop this game if they are to stay in the running for championship honours, so Coach Molthen has been holding frequent practice, sessions, in anticipation of the strong opposition which is expected from the Cubs, who have been playing consistent but luckless ball..
