GUNBOATS AND UPPER YANGTZE CRAFT
Splendid Construction Work By Thornycroft & Co.
;
IT IS INTERESTING TO RECALL THAT THE FIRST NAVAL VESSELS TO navigate the Upper Yangtze were the British river gunboats H.M.5. "Woodcock" and "Woodlark" bulit by John L Thomycroft & Co., in 1898 forerunners of the type of which the "Grasshopper," is the latest example.
In May 1900 both vessels arrived at thangking after a suc cessful' ascent of the rapids, the most noteworthy part of this feat being that "Woodlark" had used only her own motive power and had not been "tracked" through the rapids. This was the... first occasion on which any vessel had reached Chungking with- out assistance from trackers on shore.
