The market improved on bear-covering. after which it remain- ed quietly steady.
Rubber stocks held in the United Kingdom showed a decrease of 1,045 tons for the week ending January 23, 1939.
NEW YORK COTTON
The market déclined carly in the day on selling orders from the.. Far East and Liverpool. Mill buying, however, absorbed much of the overnight offerings. Later in the day. prices recovered the early losses, due to local buying. The weakness of securities in the mid- session again depressed the market and there was some moderate selling by the Trade and Wall Street. Finally, the market rallied once more on local covering and continued support by the Trade.

The market opened steadier on covering by short interests, in spite of unfavourable news. Later in the day. prices further ad- vanced on moderate takings by the Trade and the market closed steady, though the undertone was uncertain...
