Ernie Paynter, whose batting has been a feature of the M.. C.C. tour of South Africa, to-day completed his 1,000 runs for the tour and broke the record for the highest score, in Tests be tween England and South Africa, established by Jack Hobbs. Carrying his overnight score of 197, to 243 before being dismiss- ed, he bent Hobbs' record of 211. set at Lord's in 1924, by 32 runs.
