Chungking, Dec. 21, That "China has for this year at any rate held her own. whilst Japan so far has slip- ped behind," is the finding made by "Mr. P.E. Witham, Technical Adviser to the, For eign Trade Commission and the China National Tea Corpora- tion. In a memorandum од "A Comparison of the China and Japan Tea Industries" in 1937 and 1938." Mr. Witham's report reads, in part, as follows: It is interesting to compare present Sino-Japanese hostilities have affected the industries of China and Japan. As is well known, during the last few years and during 1937 In par- ticular, Japan has made strenu- nus efforts to oust China in vari- ous tea markets throughout the world. In 1937 Japan and For- mosa teas totalled 6.000,000 more in London alone than 1936. The quality of this tea,, however, showed such a marked deterioration in 1937, that it was practically boycotted in the Lon- don Market.

In September, Japan drops into second place, and in October, into the third place, the reason being that large quantities of, export goods were shipped by the Japan- ese down the Yangtze direct to Japan and do not appear in Shang- hal's customs statistics.
