• £9,868.9.24, being nearly one third of the whole Expenditure of the Colony: The first part of the 29th paragraph should be read as follows.
"The expenditure for the Police Force alone was started in 1855 at £3,000, but may be more fairly stated at £3,670, and there is a Balance left of £2,990 to be paid out of the General Colonial Funds".
The error was originally clerical, and was complicated by filling up in the Manuscript the blanks I had left for figures with the brouillon of the Despatch.
I trust no inconvenience has arisen from it.
I may add that under the head "Police and Gaols" (the phrase directed to be used in the Estimates) are included the Salaries and Contingencies of the Magistracy and the Sheriff's Department, with the entire expenses of the Victoria Gaol, amounting to £4,446, which, with the addition of the Police Force Expenses, will reach the Estimated Total of £11,024.
I have the honour to be,
with the highest respect,
Sir,
Your Most Obedient, Humble Servant,
