for Conveyance of passengers to certain- "China, Siam, the Straits Settlement, And the Islands of Netherlands Indies.
It is worthy of remark, that during this period not a Single ship cleared from Hongkong with Emigrants for our West India Colonies, or for the Island of Cuba, or Peru, or any of the Countries of Western America, except California.
The great proportion of Emigrants who were deported from hence are of the superior class, such as have been able to pay their passage money, and the return is instructive as evidence that the protecting character of Emigration Legislation is no impediment to the shipment and Conveyance of Chinamen who are willing to quit their country as adventurers in foreign lands.
These Returns shew the number of Emigrants:
To Australia 10,467 To California 3,049 To Ports in China 1,375 To the Philippine Islands 50 To Java // To Singapore 456It may be added that the Shipment of Emigrants from the legal ports in China has almost entirely ceased, and that it is now carried on from unlawful places removed from Consular Control, principally Amoy and Swatow, in ships not British, and directed by Agents not subjects of Her Majesty.
