World Meat Production
Increase In 1937
BRITAIN'S IMPORTS TOTAL
85 MILLION POUNDS
The total amount of meat entering world trade last year, accord- ing to the report on meat just issued by the Imperial Economte Com- mittee, showed an appreciable increase on the total for 1936, and the downward movement which prevalled in the preceding five years ap- pears to have been reversed.
Beef exports increased consider- ably. and those of mutton and lamb were higher than in 1935. Pig mest also increased to some extent.
There was a slight decrease in the apparent per caput consump- tion of all meats lu Great Britain. and home production was rather below the level of the previous year. Imports of meat, excluding
poultry and game. into the United Kingdom cost nearly £85,000,000 in 1937 and represented 20 per cent. of the total value of Imports of food and tobacco, or the same pro- portion as in the previous year.
