In reply to your letter of the 4th Inst., W. 485, enclosing for my remarks a communication from the Colonial Secretary at Melbourne, and also a report from the Harbour Master, Williamstown, in reference to the Ship "Alfred" - I have the honour to state for the information of His Excellency the Governor, that the "Alfred" cleared out at this office on the 17th of March last with 453 passengers. Her 'tween decks and main decks, with 12 superficial feet for each passenger, gave a capacity for 374 persons; her upper deck afforded, with 24 superficial feet for each passenger, accommodation for 102.

Hon'ble M. J. Mercer, Cape Colonial Secretary.
