SAMSHUI

RECAPTURED

BY KWANGSI TROOPS

FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT

All signs point to increased pressure of the Japanese army of occupation by the Chinese forces. No longer needing a route to the ocean through the East River watershed, the Japanese are giving up the roads by which they came to Canton, or at least the parts of those roads a considerable distance beyond this city.

The Chinese troops are hanging on their heels as they give ground, foreigners who have lately tried to get to Hongkong by motor car testifying to these facts. They got to the outer fringe of Japan- ese controlled areas and then had to return, as otherwise they would have found themselves between two firing unes.

. DOWN THE WEST RIVER too the Chinese are pouring, and on the afternoon of October 6. Samshul was lost to the Japanese, it being retaken by Kwangsi troops. Resis- tance has stiffened to such an ex- tent on this front that all day long one sees Japanese troops being taken cri board small steamers from Osaka. Nagasaki, Shimonese- ki and Yokohama, and sailing up the West River.

Less has been heard of what 15. going on along the Canton-Han- kow Railway. Some stations north of Canton have been taken by the Japanese, it is known, but there is no definite information as to how far north the Japanese military are in control.

It is clear, however, that the guerillas have been active in that

sector.

Order has been restored in Can- ten Proper. For quite a few days the few left in the city bad preci- ous little to eat, but now they can get vegetables, pork and even beer,
