surface is a story so filled with suffering and pathos as to cast a slur on the good name of the Colony. I went "slumming" on Saturday afternoon and incredible though it may sound, I did not have to go very much off the beaten track be- fore I came upon the most appalling example of ever-crowding. It was in the Wellington Street district and I had to go through a dirty, narrow lane to reach my objective. And what a sight greeted my eyes! Houses that by all sanitary rules and regulations should have bien condemned months ago..are still occupied. Ferhaps overcrowded would be the more appropriate word to use, for each and every flat is so full of tenants and sub-tenants as to make a beehive seem empty by comparison.
And what of the children who are brought up in these areas? For the most part, they are placed at a great disadvantage from the time of birth. Under-nourished and left to care for themselves, these waits make the narrow lanes their playground. One little mite had a rice-cake in his hand and because nobody was there to watch him this meal was smeared all over the street between mouthfuls!
What is there to be done about the matter? As far as we know. nothing. It is neither expedient nor advisable to do anything yet, to borrow an official expression, as there are other urgent public works
