with a rule of the London Board Passenger Transport would have prevented the Charing Cross Underground railway smash on May 17, when six people were ktiled and 45 injured.

This is stated in the official report of Heut.-Col. E. Wood- house, the Ministry of Transport | inspector who conducted, an Ix- quiry into the cause of the acct- dent.

·

The rule quoted in the report says that when a signal fails the signalman or: ̈ stationmaster at the station in the rear-must be informed and must stop. all trains, proceeding towards the signal and advise drivers ne- cordingly.

The primary cause of the ac- cident was a "faise-clear" signal Indication being given, due to a wrong connection made during the previous night.

an

Shortly after leaving Charing Cross, an east-bound Circle train collided with the back or Ealing-Barking train which "was standing at a signal in the tun- del midway between Charing Cross and Temple stations.
