Japanese Forces Driven Out Of Ocheng

Hankow, October 23.

JAPANESE TROOPS WHICH ENTERED OCHENG were driven out by the Chinese 'after fierce' fighting during the night, according to a telephone message from the Garrison Commander there, General Le Chin-ying, who says that fighting will not reach Hankow for another month. On Friday a small Japanese unit effected a landing on town on the south bank of the Yangtze, 15 miles north-west Huang- shihkang, but were repulsed later, an official communique states.

The situation on other "fronts remains unchanged.

THE DECISIVENESS OF THE JAPANESE advance from the coast to Canton and the fallure of the Kwangtung troops to give battle will be discussed in Far Eastern circles for many a day. It is possible to reconstruct the main features of the expedition to date.

THE JAPANESE PLAN WAS BASED UPON the knowledge that following the last despatch of Cantonese troops to the Yangtze front the province was left denuded of defence forces. It was openly stated In the Chinese newspapers in South Chins the days on which and the number of troops that went North as late as September 28.
