me for six months, is now fully conversant with the various details of the Department, acquainted with His Excellency's instructions and wishes for vigorous prosecution of such Public Works and Services as are considered necessary for the improvement of the colony and development of its resources, And leaving every confidence in his zeal I should unhesitatingly prefer leaving my work

in his hands during the period of my absence, than have it again transferred to another who could not have the same facilities for becoming acquainted with the variety of services required to be performed by the Department; and this by delaying my departure would probably be the case as Captain Casper's period of service will expire in December 1856.
The Public Works now about to be undertaken are very considerable, and His Excellency may probably desire my presence for this winter here, but as it is impossible to carry out all His Excellency's wishes during this season, and others of equal if not greater importance must necessarily follow, I am inclined to think that His Excellency will coincide in my opinion that my leave...
