Chinese Massing Troops For
Defence Of Canton
Shanghai, October 17.
On their advance against Canton the Japanese forces crossed the East River-a tributary of the Pearl River-early yesterday morning according to reports from the South China front.
The Japanese continued to advance' in the direction of the Can- ton-Kowloon railway and are already in its neighbourhood. The oc- cupation of the railway line is expected to take place at any mo ment."
As the Japanese reports show the Chinese have concentrated 20, 000 men, at Tsengcheng, 70 kilo. metres east of Canton to assist in the defence of Canton itself.
On the Yangtze front the Japan- ese land, sea and air forces have made heavy attacks on the Chinese so-called, second line of defence within which ile Shiweiyao and Taych.
