NEW AIR LINE
TO S. AMERICA
Will Be Ready This Month
Two contrasted types of moder air lizer, one "British and the other American, are now "bdīnfrig into interisive service with "two" British operating companies.„
Fown and maintained by British personnel, and working over com- parable routes, the machines will aaord the keenest comparison, yet possible Between British and American commercial aircraft. In a year's time it is expected that data will be available which will enable, operators to judge · accu- rately between the two types.
The British machine is the Armstrong Whitworth Ensign a type ordered by Imperial Air- ways a long time ago but only now coming into service.
The American machine is the Lockheed 14 of the latest type which will be used for the West Africa route by Brilish Airways, Ltd.
250 M.P.B.
THE SERTIONS
Four of the Lockheed 14's have been ordered. They are twin-en- gined, all-metal monoplanes similar to that used by Mr. Howard Hughes for his flight round the top of the world. They are credited with, a top speed of 250 m.p.h, and n number of senior pilots of British Airways have been selected to fly them on the West Africa route.
By contrast, the top speed of the Ensign seeins low, at about 205 m.p.h, according to the latest figures secured dur- ing acceptance trials, but it is a much bigger machine. The Ensign trudses at about, 170 m.p.h., and the Lockheed 14 at about 225 m.p.h. Both machines employ such com- ponents as retractable undercar. riages and variable pitch air- screws. But the passenger will find much more room in the British machine than in the Ameri- can. Whether passengers are in- fluenced by the extra comfort which the additional space may be présumed 'to. give, is, a point which has not yet been settled.
In the past, air line ex- perience has suggested that pas- sengers will put up with a cer- tain amount of discomfort of they are given a 'good deal of
