The market opened 1 cent lower for all deliveries as com- pared with Friday's closing quotations.
After the opening the market ruled weak. reflecting the grave political crisis in Europe. Nervous selling for trade and speculative accounts caused prices to further decline by 1/4 cent for all deliveries. It was difficult to trade due to the reluctance of buyers to enter into fresh commitments, the market closing with a quiet undertone.
According to the International Rubber Régulation Committee world consumption for the first six months of this year amounted to 420,895 tons, compared with 587,751 tons for the first half year of 1937, of which American consumption. was "only 40.6 per cent this year as compared with 53.1 per cent for the same period in 1937. Thus it is apparent that the decline is largely accounted for by the. sharp decrease in US. consumption. However, there are definite in- dications that American consumption will claim a very much higher percentage of total world consumption for the remaining six months of this year,
