FOUR BIG EUROPEAN POWERS MAY HOLD PARLEY

POSSIBLE SEQUEL TO BERCHTESGADEN TALK Chamberlain And Hitler To Hold Further Meeting

PARIS. SEPTEMBER 16.

STRONG RUMOURS ARE CURRENT HERE REGARDING AN IM- MINENT MEETING BETWEEN THE HEADS OF THE FOUR BIG EUROPEAN POWERS, NAMELY BRITAIN, FRANCE, GERMANY., AND ITALY.

French political circles, however, describe the news as "premature,” It is believed that the suggestion may have been made by Herr Hitler to Mr. Chamberlain when they met yesterday but was not ac- cepted.

Faris opinion is, as before. that it is impossible not to include So- viet Russia at such a meeting.

It is learned from well-informed German circles at Berchtesgaden that the second meeting between Mr. Chamberlain and the German Chancellor will take place near Cologne at the end of the week.

While the French Parliament is not likely to be convoked at pre- sent, it is possible that the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Senate:

· and the Chamber will be summoned during the week-end.

Mr. Daladier may go to London on Monday to meet the British made until after the Premier, but the final decision will not be Cabinet meeting in London-Reuter.

Berchtesgaden Meeting

Berchtesgaden, Sept. 16. Large crowds near the station gave the British Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, a hearty welcome as the train from Munich, where he had landed by plane trom England, pulled into the station yesterday.

The crowds shouted "Hell" and threw their caps in the air.

and Strang were onlookers.

The Fuehrer immediately invited the visitor to take tea in the big fobby of Berghof, where the party included the German Ambassador in London. Herr von Dirksen and the Secretary of State. Herr von

An official statesment issued later states: "The Fuehrer held con- versations with the British Prime Minister today at Obersalzberg, In the course of which a comprehensive and frank exchange of views about the present situation took place.

"The Prime Minister is returning

t England tomorrow in order to discuss matters with the British Cabinet. In a few days time fur- ther conversations will take place."

The conversations lasted for al- most exactly two and a half hours.

CHAMBERLAIN RETURNING, ON SATURDAY

It is understood that accord- ing to present plans Mr. Chamberlain will be back là Germany again tomorrow (Saturday).

Although the official communique spoke of "some days" as the period of the next meeting, actually the present intention is, that the meet- ing shall take place before the end of the week, if all goes well.

Up to the early hours of this morning, telegrams from London were being delivered to Mr. Cham- berlain by a motor cycle dispatch rider.

Mr. Chamberlain is returning to London in the same plane that brought him to Germany.

TALKS PROVE USEFUL

As far as can be gathered from circles close in touch with Herr Hitler, the talk yesterday proved useful to both sides. It is believed that Herr Hitler stated his views. ch the Czech question but did not by any means do all the talking.

It is understood that Mr. Chamberlain made most of the opportunity to put the British case. fairly and squarely before the Fuehrer.

The talk, it is believed, could hardly have got as far as negotia- tions, but it is generally felt that

it has cleared the air to some extent.

German circles' suggest that the Fuehrer may have found in the British Premier the sort of straight- forward man which he has always preferred to deal with to the more complicated type of diplomat.

The general mood" here early this morning was one of guarded" optimla-Reuter
