Which consisted of low foot-hills on the East of the Dalat Soon we spotted a mountains. herd of five bantangs dashing across an opening in the wood. about 100 yards off. In that space of seconds, no shooting was at tempted, especially when we did not want to disturb" the game un- necessarily.
In the course of our survey, we saw quite a lot of elephant' and tiger foot-prints.
next
In the evening on returning to camp, we received a report that elephants visited and destroyed the neighbouring plantation the previous night. It was a planta- tion of cactus used for the manu- facture of ropes. Early morning we inspected the planta- tion which was partly eaten. Since then, we were continually track- ing the elephants until the after- noon of the fourth day, when we suddenly heard the crackling of branches at a distance..
CREPT UP CAREFULLY Suspecting they were elephants, we crept up carefully on the lea side of the wind, until we came within 50 yards; we saw it was a herd of five elephants, but before I started to shoot. I again heard. the truckling of branches but in another direction.--Being-convin ced there was another herd near- by, we quietly went over to ascer- tain. Bure enough, there was an- other herd of five.
