As a Commission is sitting to inquire into the present Police System, I refrain from making any further observations about that branch of the public service, merely remarking that the actual cost of the Police during the current year will greatly exceed the estimated amount.

From the attached statement of Salaries, it will be seen that the alterations in the salaries of the officers and others, as set down in the Estimates for 1855 and 1856, result in a net increase of £758. 2. Most of the items have already received the Sanction of Her Majesty's Government, or have been reported with a view to obtaining the same.

03. Such as require to be yet reported for Sanction are: £5 increase to the pay of the Porter employed in the Government Offices. He has served 14 years and given general satisfaction during that time.

£10 to 4 Messengers, £10 to 14 Coolies in the Surveyor General's office, £10 to 1 Clerk in the Registrar General's office, £7.10 to 3 Messengers, in all £36.10 per annum to 14 individuals, being at the rate of £2 per month to the Porter, and £1 to the Messengers and Coolies, in fact giving the latter what they had in 1846, viz., £6 per month, or nearly as much as similar servants get in private establishments.

94. The next amount requiring the Sanction of Her Majesty's Government is £16, the pay of the new additional Gardener required for the Government Garden or Park just finishing.
