HE JAPANESE redoubled their efforts on the North and South banks of the Yangtze on Saturday in order to increase their prospects of an early conquest of Hankow.

On the northern bank of the river the Japanese forces, streng- thened by six regiments of infantry, one regiment of artillery and 10 tanks continuously attacked the sector between Huangmei and Kwangisi, which was stoutly defended by the undaunted Chinese troops.
