ATLANTIC

SQUADRON

Ships Recently Built

Washington, Sept. 2. The formation of a tempor. ary Atlantic squadron of 14 warships by the United States Navy was officially announced yesterday.

}

The announcement says that I was wholly unexpected that the Fleet should have been Concentrated in the Pacific since the Sino-Japanese crisis of 1931-32:

The Atlantic squadron will rim sist of seven 10,000-ton cruisers and seven destroyers under the command of Rear Adrálral Forde Todd.

The decision caused immediate speculation as to whether it was connected with the German-Czech crisis.

1939 MANOEUVRES The Navy Department, however, announced that the squadron was being formed for next year's manoeuvres. which involve the defence of the Panama Canal.

The new squadron will remain in the Atlantic at least until Spring, when the entire Fleet will visit the eastern seaboard after the

manoeuvres.

All vessels of the new squadron were resently completed in various Atlantic Coast shipyaris, and five are so new that they are still on "shakedown" cruises.-(Reuter).

Deliberate Murder Of Civilians

REPORT ON SPAIN BOMBINGS NOW ISSUED

London, Sept. 2. The report of the Commis- sion of Investigation into air raids in Spain has just been issued.

It deals with some 50 raids -and states that, of 46 raida Alicante, at least 41 were attempts to hit the port area

on

or the railway station.

Of six raids on the elty, two were deliberate attacks on a civilian

area.

Alicante contains no munition works or factories, practically no troops. and no stocks of war ma- terials, and at the time of the Commission's visit importations into the port were only coal and food.

A raid un Barcelona on August 19, when 24 civilians were killed and 80 were wounded, was either

a deliberate attack on civilians or had aim by an unskilled squadron. RAID ON REFUGEES Dealing with a raid on An-

·gust 8 on sites which were shel- tering 3,000 refugee children" and 400 wounded soldiers in. hospital, the Commission states that the bombs were dropped on a civilian area.

The low Altitude and good weather conditions attending an attack on Torrevieja on August 25 left no doubt but that it was

a deliberate attack, on a defence- less civil population,(Reuter).
