47. The Fees charged by Government for Burials in the Protestant Burial Ground are, I believe, the same charged by the Catholics in their Burial Ground, which is under the charge of the other branches of the Catholic priesthood in this Colony.

48. The amount collected is sufficient to pay the expenses of hiring the sexton and two Burial Ground Keepers, etc. The Dues are $16.32, and $50 for the permission to erect a Tombstone, except in cases of Sailors and Soldiers, and paupers. These Fees are not favourably viewed by the Community.

The Fees levied for Re-interring

49. Boats have of late been increasing considerably, not on account of higher charges, but of the increased number of Boats that frequent this harbour for employment.

The charges are:

$10 for large Fast Boats,

$5 for paddlesteamer,

$3 for small boats,

$0.58 for Sampans.

The chief duty of the water Police, I believe, consists in seeing that the Boats are registered and have their respective numbers.

50. As the Boat owners do not pay any other Tax, I do not think the charge excessive, nor have I heard them Complain, and the Tax may be viewed as the Police Tax paid by the Maritime people.

51. The Fee levied on Hawking is $0.50 per quarter, $2 per annum. The amount received in 1857 was $185.12.3, equivalent to $890.94, so that the average...
