All Japanese Efforts Nullified By Strong Chinese Resistance

Nanchang, August 1,

Attacks and counter-attacks are going on in the Shaho sector, 17 kilometres south of Klukiang, för possession of the range of hills which command a strategic position in the country around.

The Chinese line at Laohushap (Tiger Hill). lying east of Shaho, was penetrated on one occasion by the Japanese, but in a counter-attack the Chinese dislodged the invaders and recaptured it yesterday afternoon. About 200 Japanese were killed and five Japan; esc machine-guns captured by the Chinese. *

With the recapture of the hill the position of the Chinese right wing is said to have been streng. thened.

Two Japanese detachments launched a frontal attack on the Chinese central positions at Chin- kuanklao.

Best Results With Least Man-Power

WAR-TIME TASKS OF CHINESE GOVERNMENT

Chungking, "August 7.. Economic reconstruction in the rear and Increase of ad- "ministrative efficiency will be the two principal tasks of the National Government after the concentration of its various departments in Chungking. announced Dr. H. E. Kuns, President of the Executive Yuan, yesterday.

Dr. Kung declared that the Na- tional Government would spare no efforts in water conservancy, mine exploitation, development of land and water communications, pro- motion of light industries, circula- tion of rural capital, and encour- ment of commerce in the south- west and north-west provinces, and would not hesitate to render help in such „economic enterprises as are beyond local financial power

and ability..

Emphasizing the importance of administrative efficiency in time of war, Dr. Kung said that the principle would be to achieve the best results with the least man-power and ex- penses at the shortest possible time. He urged all govern- ment officials to redouble their efforts 'in executing their

duties.
