Chengtu, August 4. A new nation is being born with West China as its cradle, states a report to the Women's Foreign-lissionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church through Mrs, Frank E. Baker from the West China Reference Committee, which is composed of American And Chinese women members of the Methodist Church in Szechwan.
Szechivan, the most important province in West China, the report states, has now become the political 23 well дя the intellectual centre of China. With the seat of the National Gov- ernment in Chungking, many national leaders have been drawn to the province. This has given the Szechwanese a new consciousness of their identity with the rest of China and of their responsibility for China's future.

NEITHER WANTS WAR
London, Aug. 4.
The Financial News political correspondent says that neither Russia nor Japan are believed to be willing to enter into a major war, and in the absence of any disturbing factor from the outside an early and peace- ful settlement to the dispute is awaited, with confidence.
The outbreak of such a violent incident at present is considered rather puzzling in London...: Rus... slan initiative in the Far East is, not reasonable, in view of the ex- treme delicacy of the situation in Central Europe. At the same time. the unprovoked Japanese attack on the hill, which unquestionably is in Russian territory, was hardly ex- pected when Japan already has its hands more than full with the

The Daily Express' political correspondent says that the theory that the Russo-Japanese conflict has been stage-man- aged by a local Japanese com- mander to justify panie de- mands for reinforcements to meet the Russian "danger" is fading credence among London diplomats, and it is believed he may have provoked the In- cidents to justify his claim.
