VALUE OF EXCHANGE OF VISITS STRESSED Hospitality Of Chinese Officials Appreciated

His Excellency the Governor. Sir Geoffry Northcote, K.C.M.G. granted the press an interview yesterday morning on the subject of his visit to Canton last week, and expressed the conviction that in- formal visits such as the one he paid to Canton, and visits by Kwang- tung officials to Hong Kong, would greatly improve relations and cement the ties of friendship between the two ports)

His Excellency said that his visit was an unofficial one to the British Consul-General, but he had previously informed the Pacifica- tion Commissioner, the Provincial Governor and the Mayor of Canton of it. In reply he received very hospitable invitations from them. He had greatly appreciated the splendid entertainment which they had. given in his honour.

The very real welcome that was it was not possible to even hear the accorded His Excellency and Lady explosions of the bombs, Northcote greatly impressed the distinguished guests and on many occasions, in the course of conver- sation, much stress was laid on the complementary parts which Can- ton and Hong Kong play in this part of the world and thair need for each other, That was in re- lation rather in civil and commer- clal matters than in any connec-jed tion with the present war.

In this connection His Excellency said what struck him very forcibly was the fact that it was very often the houses of the poorer classes that were damaged so extensively. especially in the Wongsha railway! station district.

His Excellency said that it was obvious from the crowds in the streets that the welcome was not only from the authorities but from the people themselves.
