Attempt To Hit Chiang's Headquarters Fails

Hankow, July 12

Eighteen heavy Japanese bumers, escorted by pursuit planes. raided Wachang at noon today. Chinese reports stated this evening. No Chinese planes went up to met the raiders which, however, were greeted with heavy anti-aircraft fl'e.

The Japanese boribers appeare in two squadrons belsw Wuchang And then turned south after rea hing the Yangtse. They dropped bombs at Wachang where columns smoke and flames could be seen from Bankow.

It was reported that the Jap nese planes dropped about twenty bombs, apparently in an attempt hit Generalissimo' Chiang Kai- shek's headquarters. All the missiles. however, were stated to have fallen wide of their mark. landing on the countryside and throwing up columns of dust.
