I had deemed it necessary to purge
all uncertain claims,
so that I might be able to estimate
upon
the true financial position of the Colony, ascertaining the real claims and the unappropriated balance in the Treasurer's hands. This balance was found to be £10,063 12s 7d. And without being able to
give an accurate estimate of the cost of the works, buildings and
roads, etc., whose desirableness was evident
I have included such as I
considered
to be essential, and I
shall undoubtedly be able to complete
without
demands
on
the
Imperial Treasury. A new Police Station is required as the owners of the
present building desire to resume it. The
necessary
Police Stations are at present few, distant, dangerous, and inconvenient, and I propose to
apply £1000 to their
improvement,
by which not only public service will be done but the value of property increased. A supply of water is
among
the extraordinary requirements of the population, and I appropriate £300 towards public Fountains. I have found
a site for public Buildings, where erection will lead to a considerable
present outlay (I have taken £2000
