60. I do not know the Laws respecting the granting of Ships registers to Chinese in the Straits Settlements and Java, but I do know that vessels are frequently arriving in this Colony under the British and Dutch Flags, which are the property of Chinese in Java or the Straits' Settlements; and only yesterday two fine Lorchas passed through this harbour under the Portuguese flag, the owner of which, as also of a Square rigged vessel, is a Chinese at Macao.
