THE RETURN OF
THE BLOUSE
NEW VARIETIES
The emphasis laid during re- cent seasons on the neck and shoulders was bound to result in "the blouse, even had this useful" article of dress not come in as the complement of all the suits and as a rival to the persistent aweater. When the blouse or shirt-top also became entangled in the Austrian jacket and the Dirndl blouse there were so many ideas for its pro- pagation as to account for the immense variety of its forms and styles.
Stuffs have done much to fur- ther the cause of the blouse, which used to be confined mostly to whites in diferent materials, from silk to linen. A large, new range of co- lours has come into being, and for the dark blues and blacks all the purple and petunia colourings are available, as well as a generous supply of verdigris greens and kingfisher blues. Most of all, the patterned studs, combined with unusual buttons, are making suits look very smart indeed. Some of the best suits, those in which subtly patterned materials are used in perhaps greens, blues,' purples mixed into checks, would formerly have demanded a plain blouse. Today all-over patterns, soine flowery, some geometrical, are used, not to match or to offer a plain contrast but to harmonise with the suit. This is a much more subtle

COCKTAILS AT HALF-PAST SIX
Evening And Semi-Evening
Paris.
The little coat for evenings dica so hard that it hardly dies at all. Parisians buy dresses with no back as though this were 'an » urgent - need. They then buy coat to cover the back and never leave it off. It would seem simpler to buy in the first place something like the Worth model which is a complete cocktail coat and skirt with a blouse to fill in.
evening frocks. They can be worn for the rest of the evening, where- as the full evening dress is restrict. ed as to the occasions on which it can be worn. The fact that it is much more dificult to strike an exact balance with a dress which is neither day nor full evening makes the "gemis" more original than a great mariy. of the rest, since more thought is required to produce them satisfactorily. Bril- liant belts, multi-colouring, great variety in stuffs all help to pro- duce a rich effect which used to rely chiefly on the bare neck and arms of the evening frock to show that it was ceremonial
One of the most interesting ven- "tures in what might be called the closed evening dress can be seen She has both at Maggy Rouff's. the silm and the full version of the same thing. The full version has the broad. Nitting yoke, grip- ping the shoulders, into which are Jet pleats both of bodice and full sleeves. The bodice is bloused into u narrow waistbelt, while the skirt simply fits until it opens out into a lttle fullness on the floor, Yor all decoration it has an immense embroidered pocket flat on
This model is a far cry from the tailored sult, but actually it has all its features the fussy blouse, the loose coat the skirt to match. The skirt is even corselet shape, Inished with a belt having an im- portant strass buckle. It Filso looks more complete than those cocktail dresses which seem as though they are only waiting to discard their coats to become full- fledged evening frocks. For the rest, it would be possible to go through the season with one well- cut alim black evening frock with several accessory coats. One could be of plain black velvet, cut pre- ferably in bolero form. Another ould be metallic, while a third could be in some bright colour geranturn pink or brilliant green. An effective tone arrangement is a dense black evening frock with white velvet bolero, the white being rather old-looking..
High-necked evening frocks sometimes have the low back, but by no means always. Bome have Stting shoulder yokes, with huge bishop sleeves inset. The bodices and "hips fit closely and the dress swirls away from there to the floor. Other have long, close siceves and the same fitting dress. The neck may be cut down a little back and front. Very rich stuffs are often used for these plainly. cut dresses, in which the only fullness is perhaps a little pleating over the chest. These dresses. of course, have no coats and they. cannot be transformed at ages- ture into the full-fledged evening dresa. But for ordinary, regular wear there is nothing more satis- factory,

Women grow curlier and curilez until some of them, but for their colouring, might be mistaken for astrachan. There are people, how- ever, who wish to have the little flowerbed of curls over the fore- head, without too much shearing of precious locks and also without all the trouble entailed by the ar rangement of too many hyacinthine locks. People who part their hair anywhere can achieve something of this effect by taking the two locks at the side of the temples about halfway between the middle of the forehead and the ear, hay- ing them curled or curling them themselves, and keeping them fat to the forehead. Very little hair is involved, and the suggestion of the curl is conveyed. This is also. rather becoming for bald-looking foreheads those which someone described as looking like a knee bursting out of the top of a stock- Ing.
